ACCOUNTING 1

Grades 10, 11, 12 (year): CSU, UC (G)

Prerequisites: Math 1 and English 1

This course prepares students for entry-level accounting by instructing them in the proper procedures for maintaining the financial records of a business. Course topics include basic accounting principles, journals, ledgers, financial statements, payroll and checking. This course is articulated with Mission College and West Valley College, and students can earn community college credits.


Computers And Information Technology

Grades 9 - 12 (year): CSU, UC (G)

Prerequisites: None

This course covers an in-depth study and use of computers and information technology. Students will thoroughly examine computer hardware, software, data, networks and procedures, as well as analyze the impact and application of computers in business. Software applications such as word processing, electronic spreadsheets, database management systems, email systems and graphic/presentation packages will be used.


Economics Of Business Ownership

Grades 11-12 (year): CSU, UC (G)

Prerequisites: None

This is a one-year course which allows students to study business planning, management, marketing and basic financial concepts while learning how to organize and operate a small business. Students will create a business plan for a company of their choice. This plan will include a description of the business, location, products and services, analysis of competition, market survey and analysis, marketing strategies, organizational structure, legal issues, business forms, financial plans and projections within the business. Students can enter their business plan into competition at the county, state, and national levels through The Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship.


Introduction To Business

Grades 9-12 (year): CSU, UC (G)

Prerequisites: None

This full year one-period course will introduce students to the world of business from the point of view of running a business as an entrepreneur. Students will create a business plan for a company of their choice. This plan will include a description of the business, location, products and services, analysis of competition, market survey and analysis, marketing strategies, organizational structure, legal issues, business forms, financial plans and projections within the business. Activities will include reading, writing, discussion, direct and indirect research, business math, accounting principles, teamwork, problem solving, applying technology, and decision-making.

Students will develop business and marketing skills including work readiness skills, customer service and sales techniques, inventory procedures and calculations, effective communications techniques, payroll calculations, and related marketing functions. Emphasis will also be placed on career opportunities and requirements, and appropriate workplace behaviors.


Marketing / ROP

Grades 11, 12 (year): Elective Credit Only

Prerequisites: 16 years of age or older; teacher’s approval

This one-year course is designed to provide students interested in the field of marketing with both classroom instruction and PAID on-the-job training. Students attend a 1-hour class emphasizing instruction in job readiness, human relations, selling techniques, cashiering, store management, sales promotions, inventory, and careers in marketing. Classroom skills are reinforced with a minimum of 10 hours of PAID on-the-job training at local businesses. Students enrolled in the ROP Marketing program receive 15 credits per semester or 30 credits per year. In addition to the 1-hour marketing class, students are required to enroll in another 3 to 5 additional classes at their school site thus qualifying for as many as 60 to 80 credits in one year. Instructor and student are responsible for job placement. This class can also be part of the marketing tech prep program and can earn a student college units towards an AS degree in marketing at Mission College.


Web Page Technology And Design

Grades 9 - 12 (year): CSU, UC (G)

Prerequisites: None

This course is designed for students who want to have fun learning all about computers, web design, and programming. Students will learn the basis of web page design and slowly develop more complex web pages, graphics, multimedia, and computer programs. This course is a low stress learning environment and moves at a pace that will allow any student at any level to learn and succeed. This course has many projects and activities that will help students develop and practice their acquired skills and have fun at the same time. Covers: html, xhtml, css, Illustrator, JavaScript, DreamWeaver, PhP, Flash, and Java Programming.


Work Experience Education

Grades 11, 12 (semester/year): Elective Credit Only

Prerequisites: 16 years of age or older; teacher’s approval

Work Experience Education is an effective program which provides students the opportunity to gain paid on-the-job practical learning experience and skills training. Part of the student’s day is spent in class and part of the day on the job. A maximum of 40 units in the Work Experience Education Program (WEEP) may be earned towards graduation. Attendance at scheduled instructional meetings once a week for 1 hour is a mandatory part of this program.
